FUNDS RAISED FROM CROWD-THRILLING CHARITY VOLKSWAGEN REACH $334,000

January 18th, 2012

On Tuesday, the 2006 Volkswagen Jetta race car that had already raised nearly $300,000 at four Barrett-Jackson collector car auctions across the country sold for $35,000 at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2012. Yesterday’s sale brings the car’s fundraising total to $334,000.

The world’s first ever bio-diesel touring car, the Jetta was originally built by Chili Pepper Racing in 2006. Thanks to the generosity of Barrett-Jackson and its collector car enthusiasts, who purchased and donated the car back at each of the car’s first four auctions, the car has been able to continue crossing the auction block over a year after its first sale at Barrett-Jackson Orange County 2010.

001

All proceeds from all five sales of the car benefit children and families affected by pediatric cancer through the Austin Hatcher Foundation.

“The support that we have received from and through Barrett-Jackson over the past year and a half has been phenomenal,” said Jim Osborn, co-founder of the Austin Hatcher Foundation. “The funds and awareness raised through this vehicle have gone a long way in fueling our mission to erase the effects of pediatric cancer and we can’t say thank you enough to Barrett-Jackson and all the collector car enthusiasts who have been a part of this car’s unique history. ”

HATCH’S HOUSE OF HOPE RECEIVES WELLS FARGO FOUNDATION GRANT TO ENHANCE THERAPY SERVICES FOR FAMILIES AFFECTED BY PEDIATRIC CANCER

December 12th, 2011

The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer was recently awarded a grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation to assist with the many emotional and cognitive therapy services offered by its local pediatric cancer care center, Hatch’s House of Hope.

“Wells Fargo Advisors is pleased to be able to contribute to such a worthwhile cause,” says John Grzesiak, First Vice President and Chattanooga Branch Manager. “We are committed to making a positive difference in our community, and are confident that this grant will improve the quality of life for those served by the Austin Hatcher Foundation.”

The grant will be used for the purchase of tablet computers, which will augment the counseling, cognitive remediation, and other therapies received by the families served through Hatch’s. For children with cognitive deficits resulting from treatment, the tablets will allow for ongoing, computerized, attention-processing training. For families experiencing childhood behavioral problems, they will allow for real-time therapist observations and check-ins.

In addition to expanding care methods, the tablets will also be a tool with which to increase access to care for families who face challenges attending in-person therapy sessions, such as transportation costs, extended hospital stays, and work schedule conflicts. For these families, the tablets will allow for regular therapy through video conferencing.

“We are excited about how this grant will enable Hatch’s House of Hope to enhance and expand its therapy services and are very grateful to the Wells Fargo Foundation for their support of this new program,” said Amy Jo Osborn, President of the Austin Hatcher Foundation.

DYSON FOUNDATION SUPPORTS HAMILTON COUNTY HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM WITH $2500 GRANT

November 15th, 2011

The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer was recently awarded a $2500 grant from the Dyson Foundation to support its local health education initiative, Fueling Potential: Racing to Win.

Fueling Potential: Racing to Win is a partnership between the Austin Hatcher Foundation and Volkswagen Chattanooga aimed at equipping children with the knowledge necessary to make healthy lifestyle choices. The program’s K-5 curriculum meets national teaching standards and was developed through a collaborative effort between Lee University, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the Austin Hatcher Foundation. The curriculum uses kid-friendly car imagery to teach children about nutrition, exercise, sun safety, and the dangers of tobacco in a fun and interactive way. The Tennessee State Department of Health reports that such healthy lifestyle choices are associated with a reduced cancer risk.

“Fueling Potential: Racing to Win is off to an incredible start,” said Trish Thompson, who coordinates the program. “The students are having so much fun participating and have been very excited to put their knowledge about healthy choices into action.”

The Austin Hatcher Foundation is currently enrolling Hamilton County schools in the program and anticipates that it will reach 22,000 students in grades K-5 by the end of the school year. The Dyson Foundation grant will be used to help the Austin Hatcher Foundation reduce the direct costs of the Fueling Potential: Racing to Win program.

Those wishing to learn more about Fueling Potential: Racing to Win, may contact Trish Thompson at (423) 243-3475.

RENOWNED NEUROPSYCHOLOGIST TO VISIT CHATTANOOGA’S HATCH’S HOUSE OF HOPE

November 7th, 2011

This week, local pediatric cancer care clinic Hatch’s House of Hope will be visited by Dr. Robert Butler, neuropsychologist at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). Dr. Butler will be in Chattanooga to work with the staff at Hatch’s House of Hope.

Dr. Butler is well known for developing CogRem, the cognitive remediation program designed to counteract the cognitive effects that cancer treatment can have on children. These effects can include lapses of attention during school-type tasks, distractibility, and inefficient, slow information processing, all of which can have negative effects on school performance and self-esteem.

Once trained, the staff at Hatch’s House of Hope will be equipped to bring the benefits of cognitive remediation to local children affected by pediatric cancer and will continue to collaborate with Dr. Butler on the implementation of the program.

“Cognitive remediation for brain injury has been an interest of mine for several years,” said Dr. Ryan Thompson, staff psychologist at Hatch’s House of Hope. “It is so important for helping cancer-affected children reach their full academic potential and I can’t express how exciting it is to be trained in the Cog Rem program by its developer.”

While in town, Dr. Butler will also be presenting to the Children’s Hospital at Erlanger’s Department of Pediatrics. His presentation will focus on current approaches to pediatric brain injury rehabilitation and will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning in the Massoud Building at the Children’s Hospital at Erlanger.

On Friday, October 14, Chattanooga’s Erwin Marine Sales will host CELLARbration, a blind wine tasting and contest to benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer.

The event will be held at Chickamauga Marina on Kings Point Road near the Chickamauga Dam from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Those in attendance will enjoy wine, hors d’oeuvres, and the chance to win a wine cellar valued in excess of $500.

“As a family business, we place a lot of value in our customers and their families,” said Kayo Erwin, Owner and Founder of Erwin Marine Sales. “The Austin Hatcher Foundation shares our view of family. Their support of families through such hardships as childhood cancer is a worthy cause that Erwin Marine Sales is proud to support.”

Admission to CELLARbration is $30 per ticket, plus 3 bottles of the same red wine for every team of one or two people. Upon arrival, two of each team’s bottles are covered and numbered for the blind tasting, and the third is added to the “cellar.” The cellar, already stocked with $500 of wine donated by Erwin Marine Sales, will increase in value as each team’s third wine is added. At the end of the tasting, the team whose wine wins the popular vote will go home with the entire cellar.
